If you want to host a good website, you obviously need a good host server, and there are two major server operating systems; Linux and Windows. People often get confused over what server OS to pick; considering that both the operating systems are powerful systems, giving equal excellent performance.  It would not be fair to support one and contradict other, as there are thousands of systems that work on both the servers and maximum technical satisfaction is given by different hosting providers. So basically here, I will help you understand the features of both; instead of trying to take you in any specific direction. Hopefully, it would be beneficial to understand their features and then decide which of the two would suit you best.

Server Access
One of the basic features in web hosting is that of server access.  Files on both Linux and Windows can be accessed through FTP protocols. Linux, however, offers telnet and SSH, as extra server access options. This means that, aside from transferring file direct from hard drive to web server, you can also perform actions on the files on the web server, through the telnet and SSH protocols. All you have to do is know a few UNIX commands, but these protocols are not available on the Windows hosting server.

Web Page Extensions
When it comes to web pages, both the servers accept HTML and Javascript, with only a slight difference in the extension. Linux uses “.html” whereas Windows uses “.htm”.  Most people prefer the Windows form, because they can work on Frontpage extensions easily, and even though Linux also offers the same facility, it is not available on all platforms.

Scripting Language
Scripting language of the web page is very important. You need to pick a server that is compatible with your website. Linux provides support for PHP and MySql scripts, whereas Windows provide support for ASP and MS SQL.  Extensions for html, CGI, pop mails, flash, audio, Javascript are all suitable with both the servers.

Cost
One reason why most people prefer Linux over Windows is its free and inexpensive services. You can always get a cheap Linux hosting, as software programs on Linux are always for free, where as Windows require you to purchase their software programs at an expensive price. More importantly, it has to be licensed by Microsoft, which is in itself a tiring process.

Security
Well, Windows does highly promote its security levels, still most administrators find it falling back on its words. Linux, because of its simple interface provides a strong security base. Windows on the other hand is more vulnerable to attacks and does not provide the needed level of security. However, Linux too has its flaws, so we cannot rule out any one of them as being 100% safe.

Conclusion
Both the servers, serves their purpose well, and you being the administrator are partly more responsible to run the site affectively, rather than being totally dependent on the server OS. Being an administrator, you need to be fluent in both the servers and given a challenge, you should be able to bring out the best of them. Overall, the operating systems do not have much of a difference, with the cost being the only gap between the two.

Spanish webhosting provider Evalice (www.evalice.com) as part of improving its services has begun to use Ksplice, this application eliminates the usual restarts that are performed by web hosting providers on the servers when updating the Linux Kernel.

One of the great improvements it has brought to Evalice, is avoiding those little moments of time “offline”, which over the years can add an important time when a website is unavailable and adversely affect the popularity of the website of their clients and positioning in search engines.

Another important value of this tool is its automation, the kernel will be updated within a few hours of releasing a new version without intervention by Evalice technicians, so that the server security is enhanced considerably by providing always the latest version of the Linux operating system kernel.

Evalice is a supplier of innovative professional web hosting in the Spanish market and is constantly looking to improve services to its customers at the lowest possible cost. We are committed to safety, for this reason we have begun using Ksplice in all our shared hosting servers with very good results.

The reports so far we had to send our customers to inform them that the server would be restarted to update the kernel will no longer be necessary, increasing the availability of web sites and removing the little annoyances that cause these reboots.

Intel Corporation today unveiled several new initiatives under its “Cloud 2015” vision aimed at making cloud-based Internet computing more interoperable, secure and simplified.

Intel’s Cloud 2015 vision has three key elements: a “federated” cloud that allows enterprises to share data across internal and external clouds; an “automated” network that automatically allows the secure movement of applications and resources to significantly improve energy efficiency in data centers; and PC and device-savvy “client-aware” clouds that know what types of applications, commands and processing should take place in the cloud or on your laptop, smartphone or other device – thus taking a user and specific device’s unique features into account to fully optimize an online experience.

Intel will support these goals by creating software and building new capabilities into Intel® Xeon® processors, which include features such as Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) and Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT) that form the basis of cloud computing today.

Open Data Center Alliance
As a step toward Cloud 2015, Intel helped create the Open Data Center Alliance, a coalition of more than 70 leading businesses that together represent more than $50 billion in annual IT investment and that have cloud research or projects underway. Alliance Steering Committee members include BMW*, China Life*, Deutsche Bank*, J.P. Morgan Chase*, Lockheed Martin*, Marriott International, Inc.*, National Australia Bank*, Shell*, Terremark* and UBS*.The alliance will lay out future hardware and software requirements that lead to more open and interoperable cloud and data center solutions. Intel plays a unique advisory role within the alliance, whose initial membership is focused on end user companies rather than technology providers.

Intel embraces the Open Data Center Alliance’s vision and goals and plans to deliver products and solutions consistent with these goals. Intel will work with its hardware and software partners, engaging the industry to innovate on open standards, delivering a faster ramp to the next stage of the Internet, and delivering an open, interoperable and secure cloud that will empower the next generation of business, movies, gaming, music, social media and other yet-to-be-invented Web services.

“The industry has an opportunity to accelerate the potential of cloud computing, delivering even better industry economics through this transformation,” said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager, Intel Data Center Group. “With the Open Data Center Alliance we now have the world’s top businesses focused and actively engaged with Intel and the high-tech industry, accelerating solutions to the cloud’s key challenges. The server industry has gone through an amazing transformation since the Intel Pentium® Pro’s introduction in 1995; our goal is to ensure that cloud computing continues to deliver breakthrough economics based on the same fundamental principle —innovation on open, interoperable standards.”

Iomart Group plc the managed hosting and cloud computing services company, has today acquired the entire issued share capital of Titan Internet Limited, a leading UK managed server hosting company, for £3.6M ($5.7M) cash on completion with a further amount of up to £0.6M ($0.96M) payable in April 2011.

Titan Internet, founded eleven years ago, has become one of the UK’s most respected and technically advanced managed hosting companies, particularly in the areas of virtualisation and network management. In recent years Titan Internet has achieved a well deserved reputation for excellent customer delivery and service.

Titan is focussed on delivering highly reliable complex managed and virtualised hosting solutions and has built an impressive client base, currently managing over 1,000 servers on behalf of clients ranging from SMEs to large corporates.

As at 31 August 2009, the net assets of Titan were £765k with revenues of £3.4M ($5.4M), EBITDA of £648k($1M) and pre-tax profits of £342k ($548k). Titan currently has net cash of approximately £500k ($802K).

Angus MacSween, CEO iomart Group plc, stated: “We announced back in June that the Group intended to become the UK’s leader in the relatively new cloud computing market through a combination of organic growth and acquisition. Our enviable position of having a strong balance sheet and an additional £10 million ($16M) credit facility from Lloyds Banking Group, enables us to make strategic and complementary acquisitions such as Titan Internet when they present themselves.”

Angus MacSween added: “The purchase of Titan Internet provides us with additional highly skilled technical expertise particularly in the areas of virtualisation and network management, both core attributes required to deliver the full range of cloud computing flavours to the marketplace. “

“In Titan we have acquired a profitable business with a strong service brand that we expect to continue to thrive within our group environment and I am pleased that the management team responsible for growing the business has agreed to continue to drive it forward under our ownership”.

Lee Christie MD of Titan Internet stated: “We believe today’s announcement will bring enormous benefits to both our employees and customers alike. We are delighted to be joining the iomart Group at such an exciting time in the evolution of hosting services. We will benefit from the economies of scale, product innovation and financial support that the Group gives us, and we are confident we will be able to accelerate our growth and revenues as a result.”

Angus MacSween added:” Having recently announced that our organic growth is ahead of market expectations, we believe the acquisition of Titan will accelerate that growth through the incorporation of an excellent managed hosting operation with an impressive client list.”

“The opportunities to add value through infrastructure, technology and marketing synergies are significant. In consequence, iomart expects the acquisition to be immediately earnings enhancing before the costs of integration synergies.”

Finally Angus MacSween added: “The Group continues to make excellent progress in the buoyant, but embryonic, cloud computing marketplace. We are now established, gaining market recognition and a reputation for service excellence, and I believe we are now extremely well placed to rapidly grow our market share. Today’s acquisition announcement cements our intent to be the UK’s market leader in this arena.”

“We will continue to explore a number of complementary acquisition opportunities over the months ahead enabling us to add revenues, profits, skills and savings to the Group”.
