Horizon, a Dallas-based data company has been selected to provide the U.S. Federal government with cloud solutions, the company announced on Tuesday.

By having been selected, Horizon receives “ATO” approval (Authority to operate).

The selection arrives after an 8-month review process. Before being approved, the government had to make sure that Horizon could meet security standards. Ensuring proper disaster recovery also played an important part in the review process.

In a press release concerning the matter, the company’s CEO stated, “With this ATO, Horizon’s purpose built cloud is officially open for government business, and Horizon and EyakTek are ready to take the lead in helping federal agencies save money by accessing the incredible potential of our highly secure, cloud-based services.”

Horizon began in 2000 and specializes in managed services, including cloud computing and colocation. According to its site, Horizon’s clients have included the Hunt Capital Group and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

In recent years, the U.S. government has adopted a cloud-first policy. In April, the government approved cloud-based Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS) by Microsoft for use by federal employees.

The U.S. government is also currently in the process of consolidating its federal data centers and plans to shut down 800 within the next four years. In April, a study by IT research group Meritalk estimated that the government could save nearly eighteen billion dollars from the closures.

Go Daddy Group, Inc., the parent company for GoDaddy.com has sold a majority stake to a group of private equity firms for an estimated $2.5 billion. As reported last week, the group is led by KKR & Co., Silver Lake Technology Crossover Ventures and will assume all of Go Daddy Inc.’s debt as well as its assets.

As the largest domain registrar in the world, GoDaddy boasts over 9.4 million customers and manages more than 48 million domain names. Despite this, the company has reported consecutive annual losses with growth only during the latest fiscal year.

For at least the time being, CEO Robert Parsons will remain in that position, and has stated the company’s plans to expand its offerings by increasing its international presence and moving its hosting services into the cloud-based services. Parsons founded the company in 1997 and in 2006 failed in his attempt to go public, citing poor market conditions when withdrawing its IPO.

Whether this acquisition is considered an investment or a purchase, Parsons is reported to remain GoDaddy’s largest single shareholder while the new private equity group becomes the company’s majority investors.

Silver Lake has a great track record of flipping and growing Internet companies, with the sale of Skype Global for $8.5 billion to Microsoft Corporation, after purchasing it from EBay two years ago for only $2 billion. KKR and Silver Lake are familiar partners with their 2005 group investment of Avago Technologies, while TCV leads a group of firms that has invested a reported $135 million in Facebook. Silver Lake and TCV are co-investors in the leading daily deal site Groupon and the social-gaming company Zynga.

A massive botnet has been discovered by a researcher at Kaspersky lab. Named TDL-4, the botnet is said to have already affected nearly four and a half millions computers.

On Securelist.com, Kaspersky writes, “The malware detected by Kaspersky Anti-Virus as TDSS is the most sophisticated threat today. TDSS uses a range of methods to evade signature, heuristic, and proactive detection, and uses encryption to facilitate communication between its bots and the botnet command and control center.”

The first version of TDL appeared in 2008. However, the latest version of TDL is said to be the most advanced and has a “powerful rootkit component.” Securelist states that this “allows it to conceal the presence of any other types of malware in the system.”

Another feature that makes TDL so dangerous is that it contains a component that acts as its own antivirus, thus making it secure from other malicious software.

Botnet viruses load onto multiple computer systems, thus creating networks of infected computers. The botnet’s operators can then access the infected systems remotely. Botnets give the operators the ability to use the compromised systems to steal data, launch attacks on other systems, spread spam, and conduct other malicious actions.

Most recently in April, federal investigators in the United States worked to end a botnet known as Coreflood. Coreflood is thought to have existed for nearly 10 years, infecting around 2 million personal computers. While it’s unknown how much victims of Coreflood lost, some analysts believe that the bot’s operators could have stolen money that amounted in the hundreds of thousands.

Autorun Malware is down, this according to a report posted online by the Malware Protection Center at Microsoft.

The report focuses on malware that takes advantage of the Windows component “Autorun.”

However, in recent months, the company reports the number of infections has dropped significantly.

Microsoft attributes the drop to updates they’ve offered on Windows versions of XP and Vista.

The report states, “In comparison to the three months prior to the update, we saw 1.3 million fewer infections on Windows Vista and XP from February to May.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft expects the number of infections to continue to drop.

The hacking group known as Lulz Security is at it again, claiming responsibility for breaching the CIA’s website (cia.gov).

The breach resulted in several hours of downtime, but the site is now back up and running.

In a statement left on their Twitter page late Wednesday, the group said, “WikiLeaks supporters, LulzSec, take down CIA… who has task force into WikiLeaks.”

It remains unclear as to if the hackers were able to make away with any sensitive information.

CNN reported that a CIA spokesman said they’re looking into it.

Meanwhile, Reuters has reported that a second breach of the U.S. Senate’s site has occurred. LulzSec had taken responsibility for the initial breach.

Besides hacking the senate site, the group has become famous in recent months for hacking such sites as PBS, Sony, Nintendo, and an FBI-affiliate. The group typically uses DDoS attacks.

LulzSec usually claims that it does the hacks for laughs. However, the group has been motivated in the past by a PBS documentary covering WikiLeaks and the U.S. government’s declaration that some cyber attacks could be considered attacks of war.

JNBridge (www.jnbridge.com), a provider of Java and .NET interoperability tools for software developers, announced on Wednesday it has released JNBridgePro 6.0.

The new version of the software enables developers to access both .NET-based and Java-based cloud services and APIs from ground or cloud-based clients written in the other platform, and to develop cloud-based services and APIs that incorporate both Java and .NET-based components.

JNBridgePro connects Java and .NET Framework-based components and applications together with Visual Studio and Eclipse plug-ins that simplify cross-platform interoperability.

This latest version extends this interoperability to the cloud, allowing developers to build and distribute integrated applications anywhere.

This includes intra-cloud, where both platforms reside in the same cloud, either in the same or in different instances, inter-cloud, where the instances belong to different clouds, and ground-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground, where the interoperability is between a cloud instance and an application running on the ground.

“JNBridge’s vision of cloud interoperability is any object or API, on any platform, in any language, anywhere,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge. “JNBridgePro 6.0 will allow enterprises to build applications that access any API, or build rich APIs that are accessible to the other side, no matter where they reside, and whether or not they are services enabled.”

In addition to the new interoperability capabilities, JNBridge has simplified and extended the licensing options.

The single edition of JNBridgePro 6.0 now includes all the functions of the previous standard and enterprise editions.

There is also a new annual licensing option in addition to perpetual, which supports licensing of virtual machines and cloud instances.
